The 3rd party app for your jailbroken iPhone was likely Navizon. I had tried it too and thought it was absolutely HORRIBLE. It rarely EVER worked for me.

As for the integrated pseudo GPS in the iPhone 1.1.3 firmware, I think its a HUGE step in the right direction? Is it perfect? Not at all. But its improving. If I’m sitting at home It can roughly tell me what part of town I’m in. But that’s about it. However just this morning I had to drive just a few towns north and every so often (while at a red light) I’d check and it was fairly close… and sometimes it was while I was driving past dead areas (rolling hills, cows, tumbleweeds, etc).

I’d say give it time… as more hot spots and cell towers are captured, it’ll improve its accuracy.
